After residing at the National Zoo in Washington DC for 23 years, three giant pandas are making their journey back to China.
The panda exchange between the two countries began in 1972 when China lent the US its first giant panda after President Richard Nixon restored diplomatic relations.
Now, zoos in DC, Memphis, and San Diego have seen off their pandas on their way back to China. The pandas at the Atlanta Zoo, the sole remaining ones in the country, will also return to China at the beginning of 2024. Photo by Chen Wu from Shanghai, China, Wikimedia commons.
